B4 THE DESERT SUN MONDAY, JULY 11, 2011 Across the Valley palm springs Empty downtown storefronts get artistic makeover Lives Remembered PAID NOTICES ViL MA- BY TAMARA H. SONE The Desert Sun Storefront windows that were once empty along Palm Canyon Drive are filled with artwork through the efforts of Volunteer Palm Springs. In partnership with the city of Palm Springs downtown administrator Tammy Perezchica and developer John Wessman, the organization is displaying artwork from local artists Jean Bradley and Terry Masters. The displays are a part of a program called Window Walk Art Design. Organization volunteers cleaned the windows of four buildings inside and out in preparation for the new decor.

Thirty-two windows in primarily vacant buildings along the street are now decorated with either artwork or historic photos, Perezchica said. "We just switched out a bunch of the artwork for displays that can endure the summer heat," Perezchica said. "During the cooler weather we would like to move more toward displaying shadow boxes." Bradley's and Masters' artworks are in the form of vinyl prints, which can endure extreme temperatures. The storefront improvement program was adopted, according to a city ordinance of Oct 7, 2009, "in an effort to enhance the streetscape of business areas of the city for enhancement and benefit of the community." SUBMITTED BY DAVID CARDEN, JR. Artwork by Jean Bradley decorates an empty storefront window on Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs.

Owners of vacant buildings that have windows visible from the street are eligible for the program upon registration. "Unless a building is under renovation, leased or is being negotiated for a lease, they are qualified to put art in their windows," Perezchica said. All artworks displayed must have a theme that celebrates Palm Springs' history, modern architecture, cultural diversity, Hollywood nostalgia, environmental sustainability or philanthropic endeavors. Owners must maintain the displays for a minimum of 45 days. All art exhibitors must either own a business or live in Palm Springs.

The program is expected to generate support for artists while creating foot traffic and potential tenants in vacant storefronts. David Garden chairman of Volunteer Palm Springs, said he's hopeful the program will benefit all who are involved or see its displays when visiting downtown. James G. Reber James G. Reber, 68, of Indio, Calif, passed away July 6, 201 1 in Palm Springs, Calif, due to complications of a heart attack.

A self proclaimed Yankee Doodle Dandy, Ken Wellner loved this country, its freedoms and its opportunities.

The adored husband of JoAnn Wellner and son of the late Emil and Freida Wellner, Ken attended Stuyvesant HS (NYC) and NYU before entering the Army in 1941, serving in the CBI, attaining the rank of Major and receiving the Bronze Star Medal. He c6nsidered his service a great privilege! In civilian life he joined Wellner Motors, the family enterprise which evolved into a mega automobile dealership. He served as President of the Automobile Merchants Assn of NY in 1958 and 1959 and eventually created and Chaired The Kemwel Group, a European Car Rental with close ties to the travel industry. Despite a debilitating motor neuron disorder, Ken Wellner was an avid sailor, talented photographer and author of 5 privately published novels which he wrote in his 80s. Ken Wellner was a deeply loyal friend, a man of insatiable curiosity, relentless humor and optimism, and undeniable charm.

He never permitted his medical issues to interfere with living a full life, and became quite a terror on his scooter which provided mobility during his final year. With his cherished wife and best friend, JoAnn, who he affectionately called Murgy, he relished entertaining in his homes in Mamaroneck (NY), Manhattan, and Rancho Mirage, during which he invariably provoked spirited political conversation. His own spirit will live on in all who knew him. Ken Wellner was a long standing member of The Club at Morningside. He is predeceased by first wife, Barbara (Bronstein); second wife, Eyrun (Herbertsdottir); and adored son, Rick.

Donations in Ken Wellner's memory are suggested to Eisenhower Medical Foundation, 39000 Bob Hope Drive, Rancho Mirage, CA 92270 in honor of Dr Ronald Sneider; or to the Desert Cancer Foundation, 74-091 Larrea Palm Desert, CA 92260, in honor of Dr. Elber Camacho. Lottery information, Riverside offices: (800) 568-8379 BY COLIN ATAGI The Desert Sun The American Youth Soccer Organization is counting on other teams to help maintain Dennis Keat Soccer Park, which gets more expensive to keep in top form as it ages.

AYSO officials, who maintain the field under an agreement with Cathedral City, now rely more than ever on a monthly fee levied on groups that use the park. Fundraiser events and sponsorships have helped in the past, but contributions have decreased over time and now officials depend on the fees. "We're just now following up more aggressively, because of the cost to maintain the field," said Jim Engel, AYSO director for the Coachella Valley. "As the park gets older, more and more items break down." Maintenance cost was $20,699 including for sprinkler heads that cost $40 each during the 2010-11 fiscal year. Soccer clubs outside of AYSO pay $25 per week, and can use the 3-year-old field for two practice sessions.

The fee is not levied on people who casually use the soccer field on a random basis. As he and his children kicked a soccer ball around the park Wednesday, Rancho Mirage resident Frank Del Toro explained he understood the fees, although he doesn't like them. "A good field usually outweighs the extra cost," said Del Toro, whose 10-year-old son plays in a league outside of Cathedral City. "Sure, you spend money on uniforms and registration, but that's useless if you have nowhere nice to play."
