E6 THE DESERT SUN FRIDAY, JANUARY 21, 2011 2011 BOB HOPE CLASSIC JAN. 19-23 SILVERROCK RESORT LA QUINTA COUNTRY CLUB PGA WEST CELEBRITY NOTES is WADE BYARS THE DESERT SUN Julius Erving signs an autograph for a fan at the Bob Hope Classic oh Thursday at La Quinta Country Club. A WADE BYARS THE DESERT SUN Rock star Alice Cooper follows his tee shot Thursday at the Bob Hope Classic at La Quinta Country Club. Justice finally served Cooper makes rock Hall of Fame; could KISS be next? STAR MAKER: Although he has a limited" filmography, basketball great Julius Erving laughed when someone pointed out that Tom Hanks never won an Academy Award until after he starred with Dr. J.

Having led the Philadelphia 76ers to an NBA title in 1983, Erving was asked to make a cameo in the movie "Philadelphia," which stared Hanks and Denzel Washington. Hanks portrayal of a lawyer who contracts AIDS earned him his first Oscar. "That cameo is getting more significant all the time," Erving joked. "I was just in the right place at the right time." Years before, Erving had his own starring role in a major movie, "The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh." It. was about a basketball team that was put together based on their astrological signs.

Erving said the pace of making a movie didn't really suit him. "I almost packed it in after that because it was a grind," Erving said. "It was spending the whole offseason hurrying up and waiting, as you have to do on set. Hurry, hurry, hurry, and then, 'Oh, we have to get the lights right, we have to get this right, we have to get that I'm like, 'Why did you get me to hurry up when we have to wait two hours before So it was quite an experience. I enjoyed it and I'm glad it's in the archives now." A LEMMON OF CLUBS: Actor Peter Gallagher, who starred in movies such as "The Player" and television shows like "The OC," said the first set of clubs he ever got was from legend Jack Lemmon.

"The clubs said Jack Lemmon Unique on them. He used to threaten to call the club and say his clubs were stolen," Gallagher said." What I didn't tell him is the only club out of the bag that wasn't a Jack Lemmon Unique in there was a sand wedge, a Bob Hope Classic sand wedge from like the 50s or 60s. That was the only club that was stolen out of the bag and I never told that to Jack." Gallagher also remembered a Lemmon story about a putter he used while playing at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am with Jack Nicklaus. "Lemmon was putting on the green at Pebble and Nicklaus said, 'Jack, where did you get that and Jack said, Two for five at Gallagher said. "Nicklaus said, 'They took GOING TO A GO-GO: Gallagher is leaving the Hope today to return to Los Angeles.

His 17-year-old daughter Kathryn is a singer-songwriter who will perform at the legendary Whisky a Go Go tonight. It will be Kathryn Gallagher's fifth time performing at the Whisky in the last two years. The Whisky is where a lot of legendary acts cut their teeth, including Alice Cooper. "We played there with Led Zeppelin. This shows you how long ago it was, no one heard of either one of us.

We were just local bands," Cooper said. The next night we played the Cheetah club with a band called Pink Floyd that no one heard of. Back in those days, we were all starving musicians trying to get a gig somewhere. "The money we made there, we put together and got food. Pink Floyd was living with us because everyone was out of money." If Gallagher was looking for advice, former Eagles guitarist Don Felder said she should make sure this is what she wants to do.

"Most people who go reaching for the stars like that and hope for a big career they wind up somewhat disappointed," Felder said "It's a lot of struggle, a lot of hard work to be able put in the years, time and effort, and starving years, and struggling and scratching years financially. If you're not doing it because you love it, then you shouldn't be doing it. That way, you'll be happy no matter what the outcome is." Cooper said success is determined by the work. "It's all in the songwriting to me," Cooper said. "It's great to have a great image.

I've seen bands with an image but no music. I've seen bands with great music, but no image. Try to put those two things together and then you have a band that's going to do something." lEIGHTON GINN inducted and to be there to celebrate it with him." Not only was Felder in Phoenix for the announcement, but most of the members of the original Alice Cooper band were as well. The band had come together to record a new studio album, "Welcome to my Nightmare, Part 2." As part of the induction ceremony in March, Alice Cooper will perform their first hit, "I'm Eighteen" and their biggest hit "School's Out." Once, in the Hall of Fame, Cooper said he can name a handful of acts he will push for induction, including: The Moody Blues, Deep Purple, Peter Framp-ton, Steve Miller and Donovan. Another band on the outside looking in is KISS.

"It's still bewilders me that there's so many great bands that are not in the Hall of Fame like KISS or Deep Purple or Chicago. No one is bigger than that," said KISS guitarist Tommy Thayer. "Eventually it will happen, but it doesn't make a big of a difference with us. We're happy with what we're doing. As long as our fans still love us and we're still packing big shows, that's all that matters with us." BY LEIGHTON GINN The Desert Sun LA QUINTA It took several years, and some outrage from high-profile people, but Alice Cooper will take his place among music royalty when he gets inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March.

"We call it the bottom of the barrel year because they got me in," Cooper joked. The full band, Alice Cooper, will be joined by Neil Diamond, Dr. John, Darken Love and Tom Waits in March. For years, high-profile people like Craig Ferguson of the "Late, Late Show" and radio talk show host Dennis Miller voiced their outrage that Alice Cooper, considered one of the forefathers of shock rock and theatricality in live shows, was not in the Hall of Fame. Over die years, Cooper was regularly asked about the Hall of Fame.

While the questions could get tedious, Cooper kept his sense of humor. "I was the Susan Lucci there for a while, and then I thought I was Pete Rose," Cooper said. "You get passed over in the nominations, you think But you just have "I was the Susan Lucci there for a while, and then I thought I was Pete Rose. You get passed over in the nominations, you think But you just have to wait your turn. Everyone will get their turn." ALICE COOPER On making the Hall of Fame to wait your turn.

Everyone will get their turn." Cooper also had support from within the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. "I voted for Alice every year," said legendary guitarist Don Felder, who was inducted in 1998 as a member of the Eagles. "I'm so happy to see him finally inducted. He definitely deserved it and I'm very happy for him. "We just did a show together for his charity in December, and it was a great thrill to be able to announce there that he was being 9 0W.
