The fact that 1998 was a wet year likely helped keep the animals away from developed areas, which is where the vast majority of lambs die. More common is a year like 1999, when seven of eight lambs died, DeForge said. The endangered bighorn population consists of 335 animals that live in the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto and mountains that stretch south toward Mexico. Mr. Kurtik was a member of Mountainside Church of Christ in Albuquerque. He was an award winning softball coach. He was also an avid golfer and responsible for creating sands for sand traps for several golf courses in California, Nevada, and New Mexico. Mr.

Kurtik was a member of the General Contractors of New Mexico, New Mexico Redi-Mix Associated and the Associated General Contractors. Hernandez, 58, of Cathedral City died on March 15, 2000, at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage. She was born on Feb. 16, 1942, to Felix and Carmen Ramirez Arce in California. Mrs. Hernandez was a community aide for the Palm Springs Unified School District 1 for 18 years.

She belonged to St. Louis Catholic Church and the Palm Springs Elks "Does." A charter member of the League of United Latin American Citizens for 23 years, she was a former member of the Sociedad Progresista Mexicana and a former member of the Rancho Mirage Women's Club. She is survived by her husband, Calletano "Tony" Hernandez of Cathedral City; two daughters, Hernandez and Jessica Hernandez, both of Cathedral City; her son, Marc Anthony Hernandez of Cathedral City; two brothers, Ernesto Lazo of San Bernardino and Rudy Arce of San Diego; four sisters, Irene Calderon of Los Angeles, Anna Beck of Orange, Alice Molina of Blythe and Helen Rios of El Centro; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Felix, Manuel and Henry Arce. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 09 a.m.

He is survived by his wife, Joy of Rancho Mirage; two daughters, Nancy of Pacific Palisades and Jill Stanley of Cape Coral, his son, Paul of Santa Rosa; and one grandson. BERNATZ After living a truly one-of-a-kind life, John passed away on March 14, 2000 in Rancho Mirage, California.

He was the beloved father of John Bernatz (loseph Marek). Julia Bernatz, (Dr. Bradley Langer) and Dr. Robert Bernatz; the proud grandfather of Sylvie Langer, the supportive partner in parenting with Joan Bernatz, the dear brother of Marguerite Hollingsworth, Kathryne Meihaus and Thomas Bernatz, the eccentric uncle to a host of nephews and nieces the cherished cousin of a few and a fond friend to all. On April 18, 1925, he was born in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Although he never stopped learning, John's formal schooling included Park School, Culver Military Academy, Purdue University and Indiana University. As a World War Il infantrymen, he fought across Europe with the Timberwolf Division receiving the Purple Heart for wounds suffered in Belgium. Always a an independent thinker, John prided himself on his strong respect for everyone's freedom and independence as well as his ability to seek out new ideas and friends that would help shape the world. Besides his children, his greatest pleasure came from the quirky and whimsical side of life. He was an avid adventurer, frustrated entrepreneur, successful investor, esoteric collector and a charming raconteur.

She was born on Dec. 9, 1916, to Anastacio and Modesta Branes Perez in Blythe. Mrs. Mascorro was a caretaker for five years. Inurnment will be in Indiana. The family suggests donations to International Relief Fund, San Diego. Alfred Hess, 89 Alfred Vernon Hess, 89, of Palm Desert died on March 16, 2000, in Palm Desert. He was born on Nov. 16, 1910, to Jacob and Mabel Miller Hess at Ephrata, Pa.

He married Alice M. Johnson on Oct. 17, 1937, in Indianapolis. Mr. Hess was a pastor with the Lutheran Church of America for-37 years.

He served in the Army from 1943 to 1947. He is survived by his wife, Alice of Palm Desert; his daughter, Deborah Garver of Palm Desert; and two grandchildren. A private family service will be held.
