W. ACROSS THE VALLEY THE DESERT SUN Wednesday. November 18, 1994 tie sc3eiaa La QtflDDii'fia pool spairfc A funeral Mass for Maria Limon, CS, of Cathedral City will be at 9 un. Friday at St Louis Catholic Church, 37-229 Glenn Ave, in Cathedral City. Lira.

Limon, a native of Guadalajara, Mexico, died Monday at AJ-hambra Hospital in La Ha bra. She Lorraine Martin Hobbs, 72, of Granbury, Texas, died Monday at her home. She was born in Oakland and was a former Palm Springs resident She was the retired owner of a shopping center. Hobbs. There were no services. Perkins cast the dissenting Mayor John PeBa abstained because be owns property near the proposed site on Avenue 52 in the cove. Perkins criticized his council col-. leagues for voting to let the department send the survey to residents without council review and approval But Sniff and Mayor Pro Tem Glenda Bangerter dismissed his concerns.

"I have so much confidence in our staff that I felt they would do a really good job," Bangerter said. The survey should be mailed to residents soon. It will cost the city up to $8,500. on a city pool Maintenance could cost $250,000 to $300,000 a year, Perkins said, adding that the money could be better spent elsewhere, such as for more police officers. Cosper said maintenance for the park and swim center would be paid for from a lighting and landscaping assessment and with $130,000 a year from the general fund.

"The money is there," he said. Councilman Stanley Sniff disagreed with Perkins. "To me there is no greater need than the need to provide recreation facilities and park faculties," he said. He said fees collected from builders to offset the effects of development in the area were set aside long ago to help fund the park project On Nov. 1, the council voted 3-1 to authorize the city Parks and Recreation Department to survey people on the services they want at the pool, particularly whether they prefer long hours of open swimming or a variety of aquatics classes and activities.

By DOUGLAS HAEERMAN The Desert Sun LA QUINTA City Councilman Ron Perkins on Tuesday questioned the proposed $2.7 million Fritz Burns Park project, saying its planned swim center was likely to be "an albatross." "I think there's a big difference between what we need to have and what we want to have," he said at a regular council meeting. The city recently accepted 14 bids for the project and is reviewing them, Public Works Director David Cosper said. If a contract is awarded, the proposed park and pool should open around May, he said. But Perkins said residents are unlikely to use the pool enough to justify its construction. "I think it's an albatross," he said.

"I think it's going to come back to haunt us." He suggested the city arrange to use the La Quinta High School pool during non-school hours to gauge demand before spending millions Memorial services for Frank Elliott, 72, of Palm Desert will be held 1 pjn.
