Interment was in Coachella Self-esteem. Continued from Page A-1 but no one has come to me to complain," she said, adding that it's possible that complaints have gone through the office of Linda Bray, assistant superintendent of educational services. Bray was unavailable for comment. Jan Ryan, drug and alcohol coordinator of the Desert Sands Unified School District, who attended the meeting as a Desert Sands representative and stressed that she didn't want to speak on behalf of the district, said she felt that any community concern is valid and that she appreciates Steinke and her group's efforts and views.

In a presentation to a community group a few months ago, Steinke said that some kindergarten and first grade teachers in the Desert Sands district were using a "magic circle" to encourage children to answer questions based on DAVID ROBERT NINOAMIGLIORE David Nino-Amigliore, 18, a resident of Palm Desert, died on May 16 in Indian Wells. The questions, Steinke had said, came from Jack Canfield's book on self-esteem teaching and included questions on topics such as whether the children ever favor one parent over the other, whether they ever wish one parent would leave, or whether they ever wish they were dead. Ryan said in a recent phone interview that Canfield's book is not being used anywhere in the district and such questions are not being asked in magic circles. "To my knowledge, this is entirely untrue," she said. Ryan did say, however, that the circle technique of -esteem education is used in some Desert Sands curriculums including "Project Charlie" and "Here's Looking At You 2000." A native of Massachusetts, Mr.

Rydecki was a life-time member of the P.G.A., and a contributor to Jr. Golf. He was a professional golfer in Santa Barbara and Camarillo and taught many of the golf pros of today. He is survived by four daughters and one son: Sharon McClain, Joni Rydecki and Judith Rydecki all of New Mexico and Decann Stowers of Florida; and James Rydecki of Sacramento; one sister, Helen Rydecki of Massachusetts; and friend Chevelle Raganit of Palm Desert; five grandchildren. students.

"The results have been measured for 25 years," Coulson said. "Students continue to decline in competing academically and they're choosing to experiment with drugs and sex. "Kids are tossed back on their own resources and they don't have any," he said. "They need direction. When school doesn't give it, many kids decide to check out (commit suicide).

"They don't want to be in charge and they're being told they're in charge of their own lives." Coulson said that while there is no proof as of yet that the selfesteem programs had any bearing on school districts with increased suicide rates, there does appear to be a correlation. According to Coulson's writings and speeches, the Quest program's own research indicated that it caused students to begin using drugs. "Back in the late '70s Quest did a study of the patterns of marijuana use, comparing children who went through their high school program called "Skills for Living" and children who were in a control group who didn't get any drug education at all. "And what they found is that the kids who went through "Skills for Living" started using marijuana," Coulson said in a 1988 speech in Texas. She added that she was disappointed during the meeting with the citizens' group because neither Coulson nor group members offered alternative curriculums suggestions.

"I was a little disappointed that they didn't bring some of what they like," Ryan said. "They didn't have suggestions for other curriculums." However, Steinke said her group brought at least four other alternative hands-on programs that have been approved by President Bush's education council and have shown decreases in drug use. "But they (school administrators at the meeting) didn't even want to talk," Steinke said. "These are programs based on good, basic, sound values." The main issues at hand for the citizens' group are that the selfesteem curriculums, including "Here's Looking At You 2,000," "Quest" and "Project Charlie" all encourage students to think for Interment was private. MARJORIE T.

SPAGNOLI Marjorie T. Spagnoli, age 68, passed away in Indio on May 20. A native of New York, Mrs. Spagnoli was a resident of Palm Desert and had been a draftsperson with the Dracon Industry for 40 years. She is survived by her husband, John Spagnoli of Palm Desert; four daughters and two sons: Christine Spagnoli of Los Angeles; Jean Spagnoli of Palm Desert; Patricia Hartman and Constance McAdams both of Phoenix; Leslie John Spagnoli of Mission Viejo and Richard Reagan of Cleveland; one brother, Thor Bank of Minneapolis; and seven grandchildren.

Interment was private. themselves and to develop their own set of values and make their own decisions. The group claims that portions of the courses encourage students to reject the values of their families and others in order to give themselves the self-confidence to say no to drugs, alcohol and premarital sex experimentation. "It's not all bad," Steinke said of the curriculums. "There are al lot of very good points.

They're telling kids not to do drugs. At first, without understanding the underlying tone, you'd think it's fine. But it's the method in which it's taught. "It's a forum of bringing negative emotions and feelings out in kids. And then there is no concrete road to follow to solve them (problems brought out).

The emphasis is based on feelings. It's how they feel. There are no values and absolutes. They have the opportunity to decide their own values," she said. According to the report, the task force found that the family is "the incubator of self-esteem and the most crucial social unit in a child life's life and development." It added that, since children spend so much time in school, "schools that feature self-esteem as a clearly stated component of their goals, policies and practices are more successful academically as well as in developing healthy self-esteem." The task force's report recommends that "every school district in California adopt 1 the promotion of self and of personal and social responsibility as a clearly stated goal, integrated into its total curriculums and informing all of its policies and operations.

Selfesteem and responsibility must be woven into the total education program. Educate every educator through pre-service and in-service training in self-esteem and responsibility." But some task members, in evaluating their roles and results of their studies, wrote at the conclusion of the report that they felt the group fell short of its goals. Administrators from all three valley school districts said that further investigation into the concerns over the self-esteem curriculum would be conducted over the summer.
