Deukmejian is required to set a date for a special election to fill Bradley's Assembly seat. The election must be held 16 or 17 weeks later, but could be set as far off as six months if the extra time would allow it to be consolidated with a regularly scheduled election.

On the day of his death, Bradley's colleagues from both parties paid tribute to him on the Assembly floor as an honest and quiet man whose strong religious faith, gentlemanly conduct and perserverance in the face of terminal illness made him a role model for the Legislature. The Indian Wells City Council, which met in regular session on the day he died, observed a moment of silence in memory of Bradley at the outset of the meeting. "Bill helped' us an awful lot up in Sacramento he was good for the community," observed Mayor pro-tem William Arenstein, who ordered the flag at City Hall flown at half-mast. As an example of Bradley's devotion to his constituents, Barber recalled that en route to the hospital with the bleeding ulcer about six weeks ago, Bradley insisted on stopping off at the Escondido Chamber of Commerce "to help them with a legislative matter."
